About Us

Who are the Hema?

The Hema are historically pastoral people living in the Ituri province, the Republic Democratic of Congo. Their economic activities are farming, cattle rearing and trade. They are divided into two subgroups. One, more herders than farmers, is found in the Irumu territory and the other, more farmers than herders, lives in the Djugu territory.

Our Mission

Providing social support to newly resettled Hema subjects in the USA to navigate American system, to fully integrate in their new community

Preserving and promoting Hema culture through teaching the Hema language (Kihema) and tradition to our children.

Providing humanitarian assistance to people affected by wars and conflicts in Ituri province, the Democratic Republic of Congo, through local NGOs.

Our Motivation

Aware that the protection of our cultural values is particular challenging from our ancestral lands, and that there is a need to strengthen the bonds of fraternity and mutual aid among Hema residents in the United States of America, we – Hema people living in the USA – came up with the idea of creating the Hema’s Organization for Culrture Conservation and Development (HOCCD) as a platform to address the above issues.
